For me personally, I only listen to music when doing menial tasks. But if I'm writing code or trying to design my plan of attack, music noticeably hampers my ability to focus and think creatively.

When I want quiet, I try to just use my over-ear headphones without any music. They typically dull surrounding sounds enough for it to be tolerable. But if I'm still having trouble, I use my less comfortable earmuffs[1] to block out almost everything.

in Ask HN: Best isolating headphones for hacking?, a direct reply to the story

I have a bunch of expensive headphones (Bose QC2, multiple inner ear), and the best solution I've found costs $28 and allows me to listen to music comfortably on a Mac at 0.5 tick!

I use a pair of earphones[0] covered by industrial ear muffs[1]. For comfort reasons, it's important that the earphones are not pressured by the surrounding ear muffs. I haven't found any inner ear headphones that meet this constraint. Sometimes I'll swap out the earphones for ear plugs for double ear protection / white noise.

I'm not a fan of open office plans, but this combo lets me tune out everything. Coworkers have gotten used to pinging me or waving to get my attention.

Edit: Drowning out distractions by turning up the volume leads to hearing damage. A better alternative is to eliminate ever hearing external noises. However to prevent incoming noise, ear muffs create a tight seal around your ears. My wife is uncomfortable with the pressure for extended periods of time. I wear them hours daily, and especially love them for sleeping on planes.

I've used construction headphones for maybe 5 years now, way better than noise canceling and they are cheap. These ones are the best: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00009LI4K/ref=sr_ph?ie=UTF8&qid=14...

Some people will tease you about wearing them, but honestly by the end of most of my stays at Companies I've converted at least 3-4 people to using them.

Like the article states, listening to music reduces your cognitive abilities, I prefer absolute quiet. I find it almost beautiful like a great song to hear nothing but the clarity of my own thoughts.

Every single time. Setup:

1. Turn on mobile hotspot (ideally wired - it makes a difference when on SF BART)

2. Throw the earmuffs on (I wear https://www.amazon.com/3M-Earmuff-Protectors-Hearing-Protect...)

3. For extra levels of sound proof, wear earbuds undernearth above

4. Turn on laptop (lenovo x250 with 9-cell extended battery)

Having a seat is critical. I'm lucky that my commute usually involves one end of the line to the other. This makes it easy to get a seat. Also, don't completely zone out into your laptop. More than once I've had people warn me to keep my eyes open for some of the more interesting characters who ride the BART.

For a brief moment I was interested in noise cancelling headphones for airplane usage.

Much, much simpler, cheaper - and certainly more effective - is to use any old earbuds that you prefer and put them underneath a pair of these:

No batteries to deal with, no mode switching, much less expensive, etc. It works wonderfully and the only downside is that you look a little odd.

I've never used any active noise cancelling headphones. I swear by wearing shooting or construction style hearing protectors. I wear them on air planes with my corded earbuds under them. And since I haves tarted a job where I share an office I definitely swear by them when an officemate starts talking loudly on the phone. I have these but I only bought them because they were in stock at the store https://www.amazon.com/3M-Earmuff-Protectors-Hearing-Protect...

I used to feel weird wearing them on a plane but with big Beats-style headphones so common now I fit right in.
