I wanted to get a standing desk. Does anyone have experience with one of those desks in hospitals that are used to serve meals to patients ? That would be a solid piece of furniture for me.
Edit : I mean something like this : http://www.amazon.com/Invacare-Over-Bed-Table/dp/B000QA0EHI/...
I got this from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QA0EHI/ - goes from too-low-to-sit to too-high-for-work (I'm 6' tall), is sturdy enough for a laptop, and has lockable wheels. Best $50 I've spent.
Might not be able to carry your 26" screen if it is too heavy, but it's a damn good way to see how well you fair with an adjustable standing desk. And it also doubles as an over-the-bed desk ...
Helpful suggestions: Attach a long-cord power strip to your mobile table, so that only one power goes out, and that it doesn't kill your non-magsafe-connector when someone kicks the power cable.
Also, use a large binder clip to attach mouse/keyboard/monitor/network cables to the table if you use a laptop and take it with you often.
The solution: standing desks.
The misconception: that you need to stand all day. Alternate! Sit sometimes, stand sometimes.
How? Get an adjustable desk or table that moves up and down, allowing you to stand periodically while working. For example: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QA0EHI/ref=as_li_ss_tl?... (get two: one for your front, one for your side).
A comparable commercial offering, made for this purpose and also mounting atop an existing desk, would be the Ergotron Workfit-S, costing about $370:
http://www.ergotron.com/tabid/640/Default.aspx
For the extra $350 you get easier/finer adjustments and perhaps, more stability.
For someone who just wants to get a little standing time in with a laptop, an adjustable 'over-bed' table for about $50 is almost a good solution:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QA0EHI/ref=oh_details_o...
I say almost because it doesn't quite have the rigidity that would be best, or ability to handle any leaning/weight other than just light hand placement.
For $50, you can get a portable, adjustable height one: http://www.amazon.com/Invacare-Over-Bed-Table/dp/B000QA0EHI - they're not flimsy, can take ~20lbs (more then enough for a laptop + reasonably sized screen).
An overbed/hospital bedside table works wonderfully for that. I use a straight one: http://www.amazon.com/Invacare-Over-Bed-Table/dp/B000QA0EHI but there's also tilted ones: http://www.amazon.com/Hospital-Overbed-Over-Table-Computer/d...
For $50/$60, you get an adjustable, rolling table. It's not the sturdiest ever (e.g., I wouldn't put a monitor on it without gluing it somehow), but if you're using a laptop, this thing is perfect.
