I've seen the name Cherry, but I didn't realize they offered that kind of a product. I'll have a look -- thanks!
P.S. Actually, for a desktop system, I've recently been using a Kensington Ci73. The keyswitches aren't as good as I'd like, but they're better than many. Also an inexpensive unit.
I've thought about getting a Thinkpad (now Lenovo) detachable keyboard, but the reviews weren't positive enough to make me "push the button", as it were. It appears to glitch with speedy typing. Also, it has one of those shelves, although the 2nd revision while dropping the integrated touchpad may (or may not) have beaten the shelf back to a more manageable size.
For the price, and with the reported glitches, I'd want to try one hands-on, before purchasing. Though I may change my mind on that.

Lenovo makes desktop versions of the Thinkpad keyboard, sounds like you might like one of those: http://www.amazon.com/ThinkPad-USB-Keyboard-with-TrackPoint/...
One of the things those long time ThinkPad users love about their machines is the TrackPoint [1]. There's no TrackPoint in a Mac, so I think the steadfast ThinkPad fans are among the last people you'd find switching to Macs.
There is a decent ThinkPad USB keyboard [2] that works with Macs; I use one with mine. The TrackPoint response isn't as good as it is on a ThinkPad with Windows, though. And there's no way to get a MacBook of any sort with a TrackPoint. So I prefer using my ThinkPads except when I need to test on the Mac.

Seconded. The best keyboard I ever had belonged to a third generation IBM Thinkpad. When I saw the Thinkpad keyboard on amazon, I jumped on it. The trackpoint takes a bit of getting used to but it is really great for programming because your hands can remain in a single position and it'll help conserve energy and alleviate strain.
This is the one I bought, is this the same one? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002ONCC6G/B004D9R9OM...
Apparently they removed the touchpad in this later model but improved the stickyness of the keys (some folk complained about the keys being mashy in the 1st generation.) I kind of would have liked a trackpad but the trackpoint does suffice, it's just really hard to get used to after years without one!

Yeah, I also only use the soft rim. I've worn down and had to replace them many times over the years. The one that I've got on my ThinkPad external keyboard[0] (unfortunately no longer available directly from Lenovo in the non-chicletized form) is almost flat now, probably time to order another one.

An IBM external keyboard with a trackpoint. I like it because:
- I don't need to move my hands back and forth to a mouse
- It only takes up 1 USB port
