Monopoly is like poker. It's a winner take all game with a simple set of rules where luck of the draw helps, but people reading skills, the ability to calculate odds, and manage your cash greatly increase one's chances of winning. The theme of real-estate development is a good match for the way in which it balances ruthlessness and cooperation.
I recently played a few games of U-Build Monopoly which despite its abundance of board gimmicks is a great improvement because of the abundance of complex strategic options at every turn and the flexibility of sound short game options.
