For about 8 months (Dec 2015 to the end of July 2016) I got daily emails from Amazon with free articles from the Washington Post. Information on this is sparse, so I don't know why it started or stopped.
Prime members also get a free six-month trial period, followed by a discount on a subscription -- $3.99 / month [0], as opposed to the standard $10 / 4 weeks (or $99/year) [1].

As always, Amazon is a big elephant in the room: https://www.amazon.com/The-Washington-Post-Digital-Access/dp...
WaPo is $4 a month for the 50% of US households who have Amazon Prime. That's about a quarter of the price of what NYT is asking for, with a quality and political bent that's fairly similar. NYT can't compete until its on a much closer pricing footing.
Very interesting, I wasn't aware of this option. Here's the WaPo link: https://www.amazon.com/The-Washington-Post-Digital-Access/dp... Only $3.99/mo.
I can't find the New York Times on Amazon, though. I pay $7.50/mo for a digital subscription directly to the Times. A pretty great deal, if you ask me. They run a sale every week or two.
