It seems like something like this could be best of both worlds: a magsafe power cable + USB-C connection:

I'll be damned, there are [0] and at first glance it seems like a good replacement. Granted, it is still annoying to have to buy a damn dongle for almost every port.

Yes, this is really my biggest issue with the new MacBooks or rather was my biggest issue, until I found out there are numerous magnetic connectors and complete cables for USB-C[1].
Now that I use such a cable (L shape, like MagSafe 1), I find it better than the T shaped MagSafe 2 cables, which would disconnect/fall off all the time from my 2015 MBP.

FWIW I just came up with the idea of a magsafe adapter for male and female USB-C, and it turns out it already exists for $23 on Amazon. I ordered one.

I've been using this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MMKZ8XD
All 24 pins are connected, so video, data, and power all work as expected.
I personally wish Apple would make something like this:

Before any of you see that and go "awesome, exactly what I was looking for!" - I've had several coworkers try various models of those adapters and all have told me they universally suck. Don't waste your money.
I trust Apple could do it with quality - frankly I'd be willing to spend $50+ for a reliable version of that.
