I've lived in Japan for 15yrs. I never considered this strange. I've seen similar butter dishes in the USA. I mean googling "butter dish" one of the first hits is this

What Amazon says

A HEALTHIER PORTION MEASUREMENTS - Sweese butter dish to be designed and manufactured with the cook in mind and very useful in day-to-day cooking tasks. There are different sizes as stated for East and West coast butter, Markings will help you know exactly how much butter you're getting when you cook.
RAISED AREA - NO LIP around the edge! So it is easy to get a clean slice of butter off the stick from a raised area. And the handle makes it easy to take the top off.
FIT VARIOUS BUTTER SIZES - Pretty large, but that just means it can hold more butter! It comes in handy for those who use oversized sticks of butter (brands like President or Kerrygold). Noted: The inner height is 2.6 inch, so 1lb block of butter does not fit.
THICK-WALL DESIGN - Because light is one of the things that can cause the butter to become rancid. The covered butter dish is made of porcelain, And the lid is thick so will protect from sunlight heat.
ALWAYS LOOKS GREAT - Plain color makes it go with a lot of dish patterns. Easily keeps it clean, dust-free, light out. And no cat tongue marks in your butter in the morning.
