I travel a lot and "having everything USB C" didn't help.

I had:

- a USB C cord that only supports power but up to 100W

- a USB C cord that supports power up to 60W and data at USB2 speeds. But didn't work with my USB C powered portable display. Because it didn't support video.

- a USB C cord that only supported power up to 60W and data and video.

I'm usually traveling with:

- My MacBook Pro 16 inch (USB C)

- Mouse/Keyboard (lightning)

- iPad Air 3rd Gen (lightning)

- iPhone 12 (lightning)

- AirPods Pro (lightning)

- Beats Flex (they hang around my neck and I don't have to worry about them falling out on the plane if I dose off) USB C

- a four in one wireless charger that I sit by my bed at the hotel. (USB C).

- a Anker battery pack (USB-C)

- portable monitor (USB C)

- Watch - weird Apple proprietary wireless charging.

But now I only travel with these cords for most of my devices:

Female USB A/USB C on one end and USB C/lightning on the other end. They support data up to 480Mbps and power up to 60W. They are $13.00. They are cheap and not too thick.

But for a truly "universal cable", I have three of these:

- Female USB A/USB C on one end

- lightning, USB C, and Micro USB on the other end

- 10GBps data transfer

- supports video over USB C

- Supports charging up to 100W.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B093YVRHMB

They are like $35 and are much thicker and a little unwieldy and I don't need them just for charging anything but my computer and connecting my secondary display.

BTW, this is my portable USB Monitor

I can't use my iPad as a second monitor using the native ability in MacOs because of corporate software. I found out later that I could use Duet.

All Hiltons at least have mini fridges. Homewood Suites and Home2Suites have full refrigerators. Homewood suites has full kitchens with stoves. Home2Suites allows you to check out “burners”.

I have a Roku stick for traveling. It has a feature that lets it log in to captured networks where you have to login. Some hotels have remotes that don’t allow you to change the source. I travel with a couple of “universal” brand specific remotes

TMobile has a “secret plan” called Global 15 that gives you unlimited high speed hot spot data in the US (not 3G) for $50 a month. I signed up for that.

I travel as a consultant occasionally and I visit my parents decently often and work from there. I’ve optimized my travel setup:

- I have a portable USB C powered display for a second display

- I use my iPad as a third display using Duet (the native Mac screen sharing doesn’t work on my corporate laptop)

- I have a Roost 3 laptop stand

- I have the largest airplane legal Anker battery pack that can charge a laptop and other devices

- I have a few truly “universal cords”

BTW: I locked myself out of this account (typo in the noprocast setting). I’m the original commenter.

A $14 cable that has USB A and USB C on one end and USB C and lightning on the other. It does data at USB-A speeds and power up to 60W

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B092ZT8CJ9?

Unfortunately, because of the shit show of the USB C “standard”, it’s far from universal. It doesn’t do video over USB C for my portable USB C monitor, doesn’t do 10Gbps data nor does it do 100W charging for my MacBook Pro 16.

For that you need this

Before I standardized on the cables below, I had USB-C cables in my laptop bag that:

- were power only up to 100W. But couldn’t do data.

- could do power up to 60W and data at USB2 speeds. But they couldn’t do video over USB-C. I have a USB-C powered portable display that can do power and video directly from my laptop.

- a USB-C cable that can do power, video, and data. But I’m still not sure how much data and power it can deliver.

- a few smaller USB-C cables that came with my Beats headphones and my Anker battery. I don’t know what they can do.

I finally threw away all of my cables besides my MagSafe cable and standardized on these for mobile devices (cheaper and not as thick).

But these are truly “universal”.

I threw all of my random USB C cables and Lightning cables away and standardized on these:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093YVRHMB?

- USB A and USB C on one end

- USB C, micro USB and Lightning on the other end

- 100W PD

- 20GB data

- video over USB C for my portable second display (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B095GG31KX)

I never have to worry about the “right” cord. I did keep my MagSafe cord for my Mac.

It’s not that simple. A cable has to support video which is separate from the speed.

So your solution to making sure that you get the most compatibility is to buy Apple cables for Apple devices…meet the new boss.

I’m slightly trolling. I have these….

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093YVRHMB

I travel with a portable monitor that gets power and video from one USB-c cable. It works with both my personal MacBook Air and my work Windows laptop.
